Uptick in politicking testament to in-time elections: Solangi

Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi on Sunday reasoned that a uptick in politicking visible by several key leaders addressing political gatherings across the country was testament to the fact that elections were imminent and would be held on the already announced date by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). In his interview to a private news channel, Solangi affirmed, “God willing, the elections will take place on Thursday, February 8, 2024”. Emphasising the adherence to constitutional and legal norms, Solangi stated that the ECP would soon release the schedule of general elections. He highlighted that all political parties would be granted a 54-day period for electioneering, in accordance with constitutional provisions. Responding to questions about the judiciary's role, Solangi defended its impartiality, noting that despite some individuals raising concerns, the courts were dispensing justice to everyone. He underscored the principle of accountability across the board. Regarding the caretaker government's obligations, Solangi asserted its commitment to implementing the orders of the apex court. In response to a query about the PTI's stance on illegal immigrants, he criticised the former prime minister Imran Khan, suggesting that by giving statement against the eviction of illegal Afghan nationals, the former PM allegedly attempted to garner sympathy from both the Taliban government and the TTP, deeming it "extremely regrettable." Dismissing rumours, he categorically ruled out the privatisation of Pakistan Television (PTV) and Radio Pakistan. In the realm of international relations, Solangi highlighted the improvement in Pakistan-US bilateral ties. “China is our strategic partner, and our relations with China will strengthen further,” he remarked.
